as the lights go out

she holds her head up
as the lights go out.
her love of life still
gleaming.
she fades so ever quietly
as others mill around her.
she holds on for those
whose life she fills.
she sees them growing
sadder
she breathes a little
harder,
does not want them
to see but what she was,
as what she is draws
closer

she sits

she sits in quiet
while her mind
rolls out the reels
of a life lived without
apologies.
some wounds that
never heal.
what she expected of others,
dueling with her own
self respect.
plowing forward without
looking sideways,
a gaze too goal focused and
direct.
in her fears of the tomorrow
that will come too fast.
a life filled with hidden regrets.
no longer buried in the past.

will you fill my flower cup

will you fill it with love.

will you keep on filling

the little girl prayed

the little girl bowed her head and prayed.
that all the cruelties would go away.
she hugged her toys close to her
as she cried silent tears,

joan...for joan rivers

you made us laugh at
ourselves and at you.
this something you taught
us all to do.
to take life as it is,
with a twisty smirk.
no matter how life
could do its dirty work.
we saw the loving heart
that you tried to hide.
in spite of your sometimes
acerbic wit,
we all saw inside.
and now the world
is a less funny and more
unhappy
space...
nobody will ever
take your place.

About Me

My photo
i am older than dirt and proud of it!!!! i have managed to incorporate my eternal 60's nation spirit with the high tech 21st century world. i am an artist/writer, who dabbles in rhyme, and, sometimes, reason. my passions are my husband, who is truly the wind that ruffles my sails, animals rights, yoga, the beach, waking up in the morning. i find inspiration in too many things to list, and far too many more to remember. i have added sketching, watercolor painting, and photography to my ways of expressing joy and gratitude. from living with a chronic illness, i have learned the beauty of each day, and treat each as another sun salutation, and another chance. P.S. all painting, poems and photographs are my originals karen Lyons kalmenson
